Caring for your Antique Garden Furniture

Antique garden furniture can make a wonderful focal point to a backyard landscape, as well as a place for relaxing and entertaining. The problem with using antique garden furniture in the outdoors lies in preserving your precious heirlooms by helping them to withstand the elements. It is always a bit distressing to leave something so valuable outdoors, and antique garden furniture can indeed come with a hefty price tag. The good news is that there are some fairly simple steps that you can take to prevent damage to your pieces, and keep them looking as good as possible for as long as possible. With a little bit of TLC and the proper maintenance process, your antique garden furniture will be something to enjoy for many years to come.

Keeping Garden Urns and Statues Intact

One of the most popular types of antique garden furniture is the stone pieces that you see as urns or statues. These ornately carved figures and fountains need special care to prevent cracking and crumbling as they age. The worst element that can come in contact with your stone is ice. The process of winter freezing and spring thaws can cause almost any kind of stone to crack. The first step in caring for these pieces of antique garden furniture is to get them off of the wet ground that can cause so much damage. Place them on a brick or cement platform, where they will be protected from the moisture. If you have a piece that holds water, like an urn or birdbath, turn it over or bring it indoors during the winter months. You can also cover your pieces with burlap stuffed with hay, sheet metal or a wooden structure that will keep out moisture and prevent freezing.

Caring for Iron Furniture

Another popular type of antique garden furniture is the iron pieces that are often tables, chairs and benches that sport attractive leaf patterns in their backs and arms. This type of antique garden furniture can rust, and the most common culprit for damage in this case is water. If you have a piece of iron furniture that requires restoration, don’t worry about having to put on another coat of paint. Few of these pieces of antique garden furniture will still sport the original paint, and some will even have numerous layers. To strip the piece, it is often a good idea to seek professional service so that you know the job is done right. You can then repaint, or in some cases apply a wax that will withstand the elements better. Another product that you can use on your iron antique garden furniture is a paint that has a powder coat finish. This type of finish will stand up better against sun and rain than any other paint product can.

Antique garden furniture is an attractive accent to many gardens and backyard landscapes. It can provide a quaint outdoor retreat and a focal point for your landscape plan. With the proper care and maintenance, your antique garden furniture will be around for your pleasure for many years.

Outdoor Proofing For the Indoor Furniture - Wicker Chairs

Furniture Making

Furniture cleaning is one of the inevitable house keeping tasks, which has to be performed on daily basis. We dust and wipe our wooden furniture pieces every day, but only few of us know how many excellent recommendations we could use for better furniture cleaning and maintenance and for prolonging its ‘life’ in our homes. Let us take a look at some of those things here.

Use Relevant Search Phrases

If you are looking for something in particular, such as a TV stand, you want to search. Browsing Craigslist will take too long, as there are hundreds of home furniture pieces listed for sale on the website. When searching though, you must choose your phrases wisely. You don’t want to mistakenly miss a good deal. Always check your spelling and then try different name variations. For example, some Craigslist sellers label their sofa as a couch and visa versa.

Download a Free Craigslist Search Tool

What are Craigslist search tools? They are software programs that enable you to search all of Craigslist, entire states, or multiple cities at once. See, Craigslist.org is city based. Before doing a search, you select a state and city. Your search is only for the location you selected. Free search tools allow you to do what Craigslist doesn’t. How can these tools help you find a good deal on furniture? Some shoppers live in between two listed cities or are willing to travel for a good deal. If you are one of these shoppers, you still find your good deals, but a lot quicker!.

Dusting

Regular dusting will better preserve the quality of wicker chairs. Outdoor dust and grime can more easily get stuck in all of the many crevices, more so than with other furniture. Besides using a traditional duster, you may consider employing a hand vac or small brush to get in all of those harder to reach spots.

Oak furniture cleaning can be easily and effectively done using warm beer. If you want it to shine, you may rub it with the following mixture: one glassful of beer, one tea spoon of sugar and a piece of wax.

Chestnut furniture can be cleaned using a mixture of red wine and olive oil in one to one proportion.

As you may see, all your wooden furniture cleaning can be done using only natural, affordable and healthy ingredients, attaining great results and helping you to mend some of your furniture faults.

Let Wrought Iron Outdoor Furniture Enhance Your Patio

When people think about outdoor furniture, they imagine some pretty cheap, disposable stuff. After all, plastic patio furniture has become commonplace in the past several years. This is why. Plastic patio furniture has a lot going for it that other types of furniture doesn’t. They are quite durable, very cheap, ergonomically designed, light, and easy to transport. If they are broken or worn out, you can throw them away without feeling too bad about it. After all, you can always replace it.

We do use plastic furniture on family on trips to the coast, because we can just throw them in the car and go. When we hang out around the house, lounging in the garden or on the porch, we like to have better quality stuff. That is why we have bought wrought iron outdoor furniture to furnish our whole backyard.

At first, I was not sure about wrought iron outdoor furniture. I knew that it looked good – I’ve always loved the look of wrought iron furniture – but I wasn’t sure that it would hold up to the weather. After all, iron is known to rust quickly and easily, especially if it rains a lot. Wouldn’t you expect forged iron outdoor furniture look weathered and rusty before even one summer had passed?

What I didn’t realize was that most wrought iron outdoor furniture now is treated to prevent rust from forming. This can be carried out in so many different ways. Usually, an enamel is painted onto the furniture. You should, of course, check before you buy any wrought iron outdoor furniture. Still, more often than not, furniture sold for the outdoors is made to withstand all types of weather.

What I like so much about wrought iron outdoor furniture is that it manages to be both durable and attractive. Wrought iron patio furniture holds up for a long time, unlike wicker which tends to fall apart after a couple of wet seasons. You may need to replace the cushions on wrought iron chairs after a few years, but this is definitely cheaper than buying a whole new chair, and it is less wasteful as well! Best of all, outdoor wrought iron furniture usually looks smart enough so that you can bring it inside the house if needs be. When I had a big dinner party the other day and needed more chairs, I simply brought my patio furniture back inside. Nothing could be easier!
